Example of an Application of the Milligascounter® in Biotechnological Industry

A Milligascounter® system of 6 Counters, shaker-water bath and Milligas controller with PC connection is used in PBC (Pak Biotechnology Center, the R&D department of PAKMAYA), 41001 Izmit-Kocaeli, Turkey.

PAKMAYA is a worldwide baker’s yeast producer and as usual in this industry the activity of the yeast is the most important quality factor. The quality control departments determine the activity (the CO2-production rate) of the yeast using expensive equipment and in dough, i.e. water and flour plus yeast. The soluble sugar content of the flour can differ so that the deviation in the activity measurements may be high.

To find a new way, a synthetic dough solution and a more reliable measurement system was introduced by PBC. A synthetic dough system was developed. A solution containing sugars, minerals and vitamins and substances regulating the water activity. Yeast put in this medium is tempered in a bottle in the shaked water bath. Yeast converts the sugar mainly to CO2 and ethanol. The CO2 production rate was measured by using the Milligas system. Using the Miligas-controller, the results can be seen online on the screen or saved for further computing and graphical analysis. The Milligascounter® measurements are reliable with a very narrow band of standard deviation.
